History of Rio de Janeiro


Rio de Janeiro was discovered on January 1, 1502 by a Portuguese expedition led by Gaspar de Lemos, who believed he had reached the mouth of a great river, thus named the bay with the name of Rio de Janeiro. However, it was the French who first settled in the area and competed with the Portuguese in the timber trade. The Portuguese established sawmills in that locality, and in response to the threat of the Portuguese, the French brought settlers to inhabit and explore the place in 1555. Two hundred years later, in 1763, the Rio de Janeiro became the capital of Brazil, a title he held until 1960, when it opened Brasilia, the current capital of the country.
Due to the Napoleonic wars, the Portuguese royal family moved in 1808 to Rio de Janeiro, where in 1815 the Prince Regent John VI was crowned King of the United Kingdom of Brazil, Portugal and the Algarves, a historical fact that it was of utmost importance for the direction of Brazilian nation.
